Haymarket: Furniture Workers Union No. 1 Banner and Haymarket: Equality Divided
Haymarket: Furniture Workers Union No. 1 Banner and Haymarket: Equality Divided
Lithography and Etching
16"x20" and 16"x10"
2011

When I made these two prints, I was living and working in Chicago. My research into the Haymarket affair led me to a union banner in the Chicago Historical Society’s collection with this handshake at its center. The two works were the starting point of my interest in the handshake as an image loaded with multiple meanings. The lithograph represents elements of hope yet those ideals of equality are also uneven and based in systems of power as evidenced in the broken handshakes in the etching.
